I uninstalled LinkedIn on my phone last night. It has become a toxic boot-licking, overtly corporate environment the past few years.
I have occasionally enjoyed in the past and posted new blog posts on it but that ends now.
I’ll still keep it around for job searching and posting jobs from the laptop but that’s it.

🇬🇧 The longer form of #blog posts has temporarily started to tire me out a bit, plus I have an additional project on the side for the blog that consumes some of my time. Because of this, lately I've been finding a lot of joy in writing shorter notes like this recent one about #KoboldLetters

This is a fascinating glimpse into the *beginning* of the #xz exploit, i.e. the social engineering.
Some users (accomplices of the attacker?) used the dev mailing list to badger and harass the maintainer of the project who was on the verge of burnout, to pressure him to grant co-maintainer status to the attacker.
Whether this was part of the attack or not, it’s a sad glimpse into the toxic pa…

I thought that I was *really* lazy this month. 2 weeks of grey bad weather dominated my memory. Just recapping how I spent this month was ... delighting. I don't feel lazy now any more.

It used to be that you could gauge the “vitality" of an organisation by looking at the dates on their site’s most recent blog posts.
Now, if you see multiple posts dated in the last week, with content related to the organisation’s area but blandly general, you can probably assume it's an seo-infused web zombie running on automatic.

A summary of some ways Bluesky differs from Mastodon:
A focus on the global conversation
Which is to say, manipulating the things you are shown such that you are broadcast to from megastars rather than talking to a community.
Your Mastodon server is part of your username, and becomes part of your identity.
I am not a handle! I am a free man! I guess that means on Bluesky you're stuck with the one identity and can't transition into a new identity 😆
breaking news, viral posts, and algorithmic feeds
Ugh.
Composable moderation.
Which is to say hiding the nazis instead of deleting them. Putting up a veil instead of addressing a problem.
Composable feeds:... there are currently over 40,000 algorithmic feeds to choose from!
It's just like TV!
Your Mastodon timeline is only made up of posts from accounts you follow
Damn right.
Moving hosting services should be like changing your cell phone provider — you should be able to keep your identity and data.
I'm leaning more towards auto-delete after a month lately, but that still hasn't quite overcome my inner archivist.
Losing an account when a server went down is indeed a good chunk of why I started a server.

Hi! Thought I would mention, something is happening with the RSS feed on your blog which looks a bit odd to me. A batch of posts (11 of them) have (re?)appeared in my feed reader all with exactly the same timestamp, not matching the date on the actual posts. I think they might be ones I hadn't yet read, getting re-upped somehow. Timestamp was 16.54 yesterday, though that might be specific to my timezone in England. A similar thing happened on a previous occasion as well.

Two full blog posts almost ready to go, think I just need a few images and they should be there.
It's nice having the blog back up and running again. I ran into an issue running Gitea calling webhooks because it didn't trust my sketchy certificate authority. Not the most difficult solution, but having the blog back online means that I can fix it, then document it...and hopefully help someone out. #homelab

Back in 2017 I had an issue with my Hakko soldering iron and found a fix but it was a YouTube video and I didn't trust I would find it again so I wrote up a blog post, linked to the video, and also wrote text instructions.
The idea being I could quickly look at my own blog post if I needed the info again... and I just did.
I think a lot of people do blog posts for others but you can totally do them for your future self too!
